TWO North Devon nurses have been shortlisted for a top national award in recognition of their work with care homes.
Jan Hearnden and Becky Young are up against two other finalists in the Partnership Excellence category of the Guardian Public Services Awards.
The winners of the awards, which look to recognise those who deliver the best practice across the country, will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 12.
Both Jan and Becky have been shortlisted for their work with care homes across North Devon which has seen them offer training to staff and carers.
As part of the project, which was funded and developed jointly by Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Devon County Council, the two nurses have visited 49 residential and nursing homes since February last year.
Jan and Becky provide on-site training to staff to help residents avoid urinary tract infections, including those with catheters, cover pressure damage (ulcers) and help those with diabetes.
Keri Storey, assistant director for Health and Social Care, said the initiative had been a success.
She said: “Becky and Jan have done a great job, working with the care homes to make a real difference for residents.
“There was inevitably some wariness at the start, but now they’re accepted as a fantastic resource to support staff in the homes and help them provide the best care."
