A SMALL dojo in North Devon is to gain recognition on the world stage by featuring in a DVD about a renowned aikido teacher.
Sensei Robert Mustard, widely respected for his knowledge of the traditional Japanese martial art, visited Shudokan Aikido Barnstaple as part of his UK tour.
Andrew Medland, owner of the club, said: "For the dojo it's going to be quite an honour to be part of the DVD and just an honour in the first place to have Sensei Mustard choose to come here.
"I have always been proud of the standards we keep and our faith in the Yoshinkan system here at Shudokan Aikido Barnstaple – after all my original teacher was the founder of the Yoshinkan in the UK. So for me it's nice to know that as a school we're on the right path."
Students saw demonstrations from Sensei Mustard and listened to his teachings during a two-day seminar.
Medland, a fourth degree black belt, then supported Mustard on the nine-day tour, visiting dojos in Weston-super-Mare, Dover, London, Nottingham and Preston.
They recorded an interview for the Fight Arts online magazine and Medland found the tour experience physically and emotionally challenging.
"Just conversing with a man of Sensei Robert's experience is very beneficial and enlightening," he said.
"He is down to earth, honest and has a great sense of humour.
"I think I'll be disseminating the things I learned for months if not years to come. As will my students."
