A GROUP of Barnstaple Cub Scouts had a surprise meeting with royalty on a recent trip to the Harry Potter film studios.

Hannah Wallis and Luke Kinsman, both 10, and Samuel Sheppard, 9, of the 1st North Devon Cubs arrived at the attraction to find Prince William, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge all in attendance.

As if that wasn’t enough, Harry Potter author JK Rowling was also visiting the studio at the same time.

Cub leader Mathew Gard, 32, entered a Scouts competition to win tickets to the tour.

He said: “I was amazed when we won but it was an even bigger surprise to turn up and find royalty and JK Rowling there.

“Apparently someone from the Scouts was supposed to let us know they were going to be there but we didn’t have a clue.

“The royals were there to support their chosen charities as Kate Middleton is an ambassador for the cubs.

“Sadly we didn’t get to speak to any of the royals but JK Rowling came over and said hello to us.

“She said it was the first time she’d been on the studio tour since it opened.”

Mathew said the group thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

He said: “As a bonus we got to see the snake door to the chamber of secrets actually working for the first time since filming, it was a real honour.

“It was a very long day but it was well worth it, the kids were bouncing off the walls with excitement.”

Cub Scout Hannah Wallis added: “It was a great day out. It was truly awesome getting to see the royals.”

The 1st North Devon Cubs meet every Monday at Trinity Church Hall in Barnstaple from 6.45pm to 8.15pm.
