A LATE goal from Merton’s Peter McMillan stopped the charge from Chivenor in Intermediate Two.

After joining the league this season, the Marines started with big wins against North Molton and Georgeham and Croyde.

But they had to settle for a point on Saturday after Lewis Harris, the goalkeeper, scored a penalty and Dan Paddon put Merton 2-1 up.

Chivenor’s winning run looked set to continue until McMillan popped up with a header for a 3-3 draw.

Fellow newcomers Appledore Academy were denied their third straight win as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Braunton. Kristian Hancock scored his eighth goal of the season for the Fishermen.

Fremington and Haxton Rangers are the season’s early pacesetters.

Haxton, the new club based at Bratton Fleming, beat North Molton 4-0 thanks to Mark Bithell and a hat-trick from Colin Welch, the player-manager.

Andy Sanders gave Fremmy a first-minute lead against Anchor Chiefs and they pulled clear thanks to Andy King and a sweet strike from Harry Chambers.

Former goalkeeper Dan Strong scored two goals for Chittlehampton in a 5-3 win over Woolacombe and Mortehoe.

He rounded off a flowing move before an own goal from Stuart Brockbank, and Elliot Smith put Chittle 3-1 up by half time.

Strong and Joe Badcock completed the win, while Woolacombe replied with two goals from 16-year-old Broadie Montague and an own goal.

The Seasiders’ cause was not helped when Kieron Monaghan was sent off minutes after going on as a substitute.

Six second-half goals saw South Molton soar to a 7-1 win over Georgeham and Croyde.Ross Curtis scored his first hat-trick for the club, Ashley Short struck twice and the singles came from Tom Roode and Jeff Henry. Andy Goodson had equalised for the Hammers.

Lynton and Lynmouth and Woolsery shared a 2-2 draw with Nick Bowen and Chris Roberts scoring for the hosts and Chris Brown getting both Woolsery goals.
