Commonwealth Day has been celebrated by North Devon councillors, council staff and other community representatives.

Chairman of the council, Geoff Fowler, hosted a flag raising outside the Civic Centre in Barnstaple, where he read out a short note from the Queen who passed on her good wishes to all taking part in the day, as well as a Commonwealth Affirmation, which sets out the importance of uniting together.

This is the first event of its kind, designed to enable local communities to join with others nationwide to express commitment to the Commonwealth.

Councillor Geoff Fowler says: "The Commonwealth is part of our heritage and it's important not only for us, but for the younger generation and for our future generations.

“Having this special day is a good opportunity for people in North Devon and across the world to reflect on what the Commonwealth stands for, respecting and celebrating together and sharing goals of democracy and human rights."
