PARTS of North Devon could receive extra financial support if they gain assisted area status.

Fremington and Instow have been included in a draft assisted area status map published by the Government which covers the period from 2014 to 2020.

But North Devon Council is asking businesses to join them in pressing the Government for more areas such as Barnstaple and Ilfracombe to be included in the map.

Council leader Brian Greenslade said: "We welcome the addition of Fremington and Instow on the assisted areas map. But we are disappointed that there aren't more North Devon communities included.

"We will therefore continue to call on parliament to expand on the North Devon areas covered, in the hope of getting this redressed."

The map is under consultation until March when it will be submitted to the European Commission for approval.

It can be viewed by visiting www.gov.uk.
