GET on your bike! It's National Bike Week (Saturday June 13 to Sunday June 21) and families are being challenged to swap four wheels for two as they get out and explore in the saddle.

Thousands of events have been set up across the UK to inspire people to hop on their bikes and discover the benefits and pleasures of cycling locally. Over half of all car journeys are less than five miles long, so by switching them to an easy 30 minute bike ride, the idea is that you'll save money, find new places you didn't know existed, shrink your carbon footprint and get fit into the bargain.

Jessica Christie, who works for Torridge's 5 x 30 More Active project, said: "Many families are looking for easy ways to get more out of life, particularly during these difficult financial times. Cycling brings families together and is a fantastic, free way to explore new places and rides and have a lot of fun. We hope that people will use Bike Week as the perfect opportunity to get back on their bikes and connect with people around Torridge."

Jessica and colleagues are setting a challenge for people living and working in the Torridge area: Pedal to your Profession… How Far Will You Go? The aim is to motivate people in Torridge to cycle to work and to find out who cycles the longest distance to their workplace.

There will be three prizes: first prize is a month's worth of free spin classes at Michele Whites Fitness centre in Bideford; second prize is a £20 gift voucher for Freebird in Bideford; and third prize is a bottle of wine and portable radio with headset from ASDA. Also, the winners will have their photo taken at The Tour of Britain event on September 17 when the race finishes one of its stages in Bideford.

To take part, get a registration form and return it to Riverbank House in Bideford or e-mail: j.christie@westbank friends.org by Sunday June 21. For more information call Jessica on 07837663628.

Visit www.bikeweek.org.uk to find out more about Bike Week. If you'd like to take part but don't have a bike, this shouldn't stop you — you can find your nearest bike rental outlet on the website. All participants get the chance to win a Center Parcs family holiday or one of 24 bike carriers in the lead up to Bike Week.
