NATWEST business manager Nick Downie recently spent a day waiting on tables and washing up at the Quayside Café in Bideford, not to earn extra cash but to find out more about working in a small business.

"It was their busiest day of the year so far so it was a bit of a baptism of fire," said Nick.

Nick took orders, delivered food, cleared tables, worked behind the till and washed the dishes as part of NatWest's Working With You scheme.

This places the bank staff with their small business customers to find out more about their challenges and ambitions first-hand.

Nick added: "The Quayside Café is one of my valued customers and while I understand the issues of running a café in theory, it's good to get stuck in and experience them practically.

"I've always been part of the local business community, working closely with the Chamber of Commerce and other organisations for the benefit of Bideford, which is where I work and live. This is another way to ensure I'm a key part of that business community in the town."

Café owners Karen and David Boxall said: "We saw this as a good opportunity for Nick to see how we run the business, from sourcing our ingredients locally to serving real Italian coffee.

"It was a busy day but Nick soon got into it, and it was a talking point for our customers to see our bank manager spending time with us and getting to know the business."
