Mystery of dogs seen on A-road

MOTORISTS called police to report there were dogs running loose on the A361 earlier this week.

Four or five calls were made by members of the public on Monday saying they had seen cream and beige coloured dogs about six or seven miles outside of Barnstaple.

Two police units were sent out to look for the animals at about 12.20pm around the Landkey junction but nothing was found.

It was thought the dogs may have been hounds involved in a nearby hunt.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman confirmed they did notice a hunt going in South Molton but no dogs were seen on the road.

They said: "Two units were sent out for the safety of motorists and the welfare of the animals. The road was not closed. The officers had a look around but it was all clear.

"An officer did notice there was a hunt on the South Molton side but there were no signs of any dogs."

I agree entirely Salza02 - out of control hunting dogs running around on main roads and railway lines should be traced and the hunts prosecuted for illegally hunting. They couldn't possibly claim they were following a trail on or near the main North Devon Link Road. I wonder if the soon to be introduced compulsory microchipping of all dogs will include hunting dogs because they jolly well should. These dogs causing havoc in places where they shouldn't be is happening far too often and it should be possible to trace them and warn the hunts about controlling their hounds. Maybe one day when there is a major traffic accident when people are seriously injured or die, caused by these dogs, the whole issue of illegal hunting will be looked at again with heavier fines imposed and prison sentences for repeat offenders.

Whats the mystery? A fox hunt was taking place, obviously illegally, in South Molton. I could actually name some of the participants. The only mystery is why have the police not prosecuted the hunt for failing to control their dogs and hunting illegally. Would they have done anything if an accident had been caused by these hounds? It is amazing that there wasn't carnage.
