A picture of a misspelt sign at an Ilfracombe school which has gone viral on Facebook has been revealed as a hoax.
The picture, which was posted by former Ilfracombe Arts College teacher Chris Millington yesterday, shows the school's new signs with the word Ilfracombe missing the letter 'I'.
The signs were erected to mark the college's transition to a church academy school which takes place today, with a visit from the Bishop of Exeter due to take place tomorrow.
The photo has been shared more than 140 times on Facebook and attracted more than 50 comments.
However, headteacher Sharon Marshall says the photo is a hoax.
Speaking this morning she said: "We have inspected the signs this morning and they are all correct and none are misspelt.
"We believe the photo has been altered, it is a Facebook spoof.
"It was a bit silly and a very minor distraction on a day which is full of excitement and opportunity."
The Journal has tried to contact Chris Millington but has had no response yet.

I agree with the above comment and do not believe this was a hoax as others had also seen the error. It seems to me that Ilfracombe college are embarrassed and trying to shift the blame instead of just holding their hands up to a silly but forgivable mistake. To name an individual as this report has done and imply that they are being in some way malicious is, in my opinion, irresponsible on the part of the Journal and far less forgivable.

the picture was not taken by Chris Millington but by one of the students, and a reliable student at that.if you look carefully you can see their reflection in the picture. The school are saying it is a hoax, when i do not think it is.There are plenty of people who witnessed the misspelling.
