BARNSTAPLE Town are up to second in the Toolstation Western League First Division after a 2-0 win at Wells City tonight.

Goals from Lee Francis and Josh Phillips continued a winning run of five games in which they have scored 28 and conceded just two.

They remain four points behind Wincanton Town who won 3-1 at home against Keynsham Town.

Barnstaple led 1-0 at half time after midfielder Francis headed in at a corner for the second game running. Centre back Phillips finished well in the second half for his first goal of the season.

Jack Jenkins hit the bar and Billy Tucker missed a good opportunity as the finishing touch Barnstaple have shown in recent matches deserted them, but Jimmy Thorne in the visitors' goal was largely untroubled.

Barnstaple host Elburton Villa in the FA Carlsberg Vase first round qualifying (3pm).

They return to league action on Tuesday, September 9, at home to Chard Town (7.45pm).
