Kivells of Holsworthy saw a very useful Christmas sale on Wednesday with a total of 1641 lots sold. A tidy entry of cattle saw the best reach £990 for mid aged store cattle with others at £906 from Messrs Thorne. A total 19 cull cows peaked at £1,005 for Geoff Endacott and top OTM cattle to £1,008 from R H J Dairy Ltd. And 144 calves saw the best reach £485 for Messrs Irish with plenty between £360-£400. Cull ewes topped at £80 for Phil Dack with Messrs Poole not far behind at £77.50. Prime lambs saw premium at £89 for Phil Dack with others at £80 for Messrs Summersby of Little Acre. Baby calves saw another strong trade with the best at £485 from Messrs Irish of Newton St Petrock.

At South Molton a larger than expected entry of lambs with the handyweights 3.5p better than last week although the heavies are still hard to place. Best at 182ppk for some lightweight Texel crosses from R McConville of High Bickington with 180ppk twice, the first to 41kg Charollais crosses from C P and C A Guscott of Dulverton, second to 42.60kg Texel crosses for C J and S E Ley of Burrington and Messrs Guscott's second pen at 179ppk. 178ppk for 40.90kg Charollais crosses from I P and L Stagg of Fremington and 177ppk three times with Charollais crosses from F J Hartnoll of Braunton and M J and D M Lake of South Molton and Texels for R Richards of North Molton. Top money for 57kg Suffolk crosses to D W and J Jones of Heasley Mill at £84.80 with £82.20 for 53kg Texels for Messrs Ley's second pen and £81.20 for similar weight Suffolks for K Hill of Bideford who also had Charollais crosses and Texel crosses at £80. C L Reed and Son of Chittlehampton had Suffolks at £80.20 and R McConville's second pen of Dorsets at £80.

A small entry of ewes met a better trade than of late with the 260 odd entered averaging almost £62 a head. The best at £78.50 for Suffolks for T Greenslade of Uplowman and £76.50 also to Suffolks, for Messrs Stagg. Texel crosses for R Richards and Messrs Eastman and Bolt of High Bickington at £75.50 and £75.00 respectively. A Texel Ram from H J and M Moore of Knowstone at £97.50 with a Suffolk from Messrs Stagg at £97.00 and a Charollais from J K May of Bideford at £92.
