Crystal Spearman was the first woman home in the North Devon Wheelers-Southfork 10-mile time trial

Mark Lees won the season’s first North Devon Wheelers-Southfork weekly 10-mile time trial.

He crossed the finish line in Bishops Tawton in 22mins 1sec, half a minute ahead of second-placed Phil Morrish.

Dave Rouse was third in 23-15, 10 seconds in front of Nick Butler from race sponsors Southfork.

Sean Henderson was the leading junior and fifth in 23-32 and Crystal Spearman was first woman and eighth overall in 24-50.

There were category wins for Evan Rouse, Ray Retter, Roger Sheridan, Neve Upton and Jan Rolfe.

Vicki Gill, an international triathlete using the race for training, finished 10th in 24-55.

Rob Bell, a veteran guest rider on holiday from Middlesex, represented Twickenham CC and finished in 29-35 for 19th place.

He said: “I always bring my bike on holiday here and can’t resist testing my speed on this course to top up my training, especially because the event is so friendly.”

The next time trial is this evening, starting at Bishops Tawton Methodist Church (6.30pm). All cyclists are welcome. Helmets must be worn and bikes must be fitted with a rear light.
