A man's body was discovered in a property in Fore Street yesterday.
Police were called following a report from a member of a public at around 4.20pm regarding a dead body.
A spokesman confirmed a deceased male was found and taken to North Devon District Hospital.
They could not comment on the man's age or the cause of death but said there are no suspicious circumstances.
Paul Connor, owner of the Olive Branch guest house in Fore Street, said he saw around eight police officers plus vans in the area yesterday.
“It is an old run-down building about three floors up,” he said. “There was building work going on but the scaffolding was being removed. One of the scaffolders who put it up needed ladders and they borrowed mine.
“When they brought them back we came back down the high street and noticed eight to ten police with their white vans and cars and wondered what was going on. They would not tell us and said it was an on-going enquiry.”
Mr Connor said he looked out his window at around 10pm, more than six hours later, and police were still on the scene.Reports are now being prepared for the coroner.
