LYNMOUTH residents are celebrating the official opening of the village’s new Pavilion.
The £1.2 million project has seen the replacement of the old 1930s pavilion, and includes new educational and exhibition spaces.
Councillor Andrea Davis, who helped secure funding for the project as chair of Exmoor National Park Authority, said she was delighted by the support the scheme received.
She said: “It’s absolutely amazing. I never had any doubt that this project would be successful because of the amazing support of everyone involved.
“It just goes to show what can be done, even in what has been a taxing time for our economy.”
Andrea said the £1.2 million project, which received £600,000 in funding from Devon County Council’s Invest in Devon scheme, would benefit the entire community.
She said: “I need to thank Devon County Council for trusting us in this project, for understand how important this has been for one of the smallest communities in Devon.
“It’s all about tourism, it’s all about getting people here, to this town and educating them about what is here.
“Schools from all over the country will get to come down, use the space we have on offer and learn more about Lynmouth and Exmoor National Park and what life is actually like in North Devon.”
Amongst the facilities housed in the new Pavilion is the state of the art National Park Centre.
The centre has been designed to have a mix of high tech and more traditional exhibits with everything from a large touch screen table and iPads to the traditional seaside photo board.
Nigel Stone, chief executive of the Exmoor National Park Authority, said the finished building had exceeded all expectations.
He said: “We obviously hoped it would be good but it’s actually turned out better than any of us could have expected. We have seen it grow out of the ground over the last year and it’s fantastic.
“A lot of people had become familiar with the old pavilion over the years, and I think there were some sceptics when this project was announced.
“I think the support for the finished product goes to show what a fantastic project this has been.”
