TWO TRIES by Justin Southam were not enough to save Barnstaple from a 16-12 defeat away to Topsham in the Devon Colts Merit Table Cup.

The hosts secured the win in the second half with two penalties and a try.

Barnstaple thought they had scored twice in the early stages but both times the referee was unable to see whether the ball had been grounded.

A third chance saw them held up over the line after a rolling maul before they broke from a scrum and Scott Warren fed Justin Southam to sidestep his opposite number and score.

Topsham came back with a try before half time and then forged ahead after the break.

Southam's second try came in the last play after Topsham had been reduced to 14 men by a yellow card for a high tackle on Ashlee Crouch. Dom Thorne, stepping up to fly half after Warren suffered a knee injury, was man of the match.
