THE time has come for the Journal to reveal the winner of our North Devon’s Best Sunday Roast competition.

We were inundated with nominations from more than 100 pubs, cafés and restaurants across North Devon.

The four most popular places as voted for by Journal readers were visited by a judging panel this month.

We are proud to announce that the Barnstaple Hotel scooped first prize.

Runners up were The Bell Inn at Chittlehampton, Ilfracombe Golf Club and The Merry Harriers near Bideford.

Barnstaple Hotel is part of the Brend Hotels group. Director Justin Brend said the whole family were pleased to have won the competition.

He said: “Myself and all of the Brend family are delighted to have won the best Sunday roast award.

“It is a true credit to our managers, chefs and staff at the Barnstaple Hotel for their dedication and professionalism.

“Of course we would like to especially thank all of our customers who voted for us.

“We would also like to thank the North Devon Journal for putting on this competition and for their continued support for the leisure and tourism industry of North Devon.”

Each establishment was marked on the same criteria which included food quality, vegetables and accompaniments, puddings, drinks, value for money, service and cleanliness.

Succulent meat, crunchy vegetables and crispy, golden potatoes were just some of the elements you consider made the perfect Sunday roast.

You weren’t shy in singing the praises of the array of eateries in the area.

What? Nobody nominated the Jack Russell in Swimbridge? I had Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago and it was one of the best I've ever had! Unbelievable! I can vouch for Ilfracombe Golf Club though and their breakfast is extraordinary! #hungrynow!
