In the wake of this year's disappointing (in fact, largely non-existent!) summer, it's perhaps to be expected that many of us in the UK will be suffering from the winter blues as temperatures continue to plummet over the coming weeks.

The remedy is, of course, to head overseas for some much-needed winter sun - and with a huge range of affordable flights to year-round holiday destinations such as the Canary Islands, it has never been easier, or cheaper, to get an essential sunshine fix.

The island of Tenerife is particularly popular during the winter months. At this time of year the weather in the Canaries is perfect, with average daytime temperatures in the low 20s, accompanied by plenty of sunshine. Tenerife actually boasts the smallest temperature variation between summer and winter of anywhere in the world, whilst rain falls only intermittently, even in the depths of winter.

The island's climate is also perfect for enjoying outdoor activities whatever the season, so forget playing a round of golf in the rain and wind during the winter months: in Tenerife you can brush up on your putting skills at any time of year – and catch a few rays at the same time. So, while friends and family are freezing back home in Blighty, why not take a trip to Siam Park, Europe’s most spectacular water park, with 29 rides, five bars and restaurants, a beach and a Thai-inspired floating market.

Lanzarote is another popular choice for a winter sun break. Like Tenerife, it's only around four hours away from the UK, making it ideal for those who want to spend a week away, without the hassle of a long-haul flight or jet lag. Again, Lanzarote enjoys a mild, dry climate, with average daytime temperatures in January reaching a very respectable 21°C. With only 140 mm (5.5 inches) of rainfall annually, it's little wonder that this island is regarded as the perfect year-round destination.

These quieter winter months are the ideal time to experience Lanzarote’s many charms. You can enjoy the glorious beaches without fighting for sun beds, whilst March to November is the best time to surf – waves are higher during this period, rarely dropping below head height, making this a top destination for adventurous thrill-seekers!

To get your sunshine fix this winter, visit the Canary Islands with Monarch Airlines. Tenerife flights from Monarch are available from just £54 per person, departing from six major UK airports, including Manchester, Birmingham and London Gatwick.
