A hand injury will keep Steve Perry out of most of Barnstaple’s remaining games.

The fly half and joint head coach tore a tendon in a finger during the defeat at Amersham and Chiltern on February 1.

He needs to wear a splint for up to seven weeks, so is unlikely to return before Barum’s last couple of matches in National League Three South West.

Will Topps, the first-choice full back, filled in at fly half in a 13-5 defeat at Chippenham on Saturday and is set for a run of games in the No 10 shirt – and some mentoring from Perry.

“He did well,” said Perry. “It’s not easy, when you’re normally a full back, to play fly half.

“It’s a big responsibility so he has got to really want to take it on.

“It may take some time but I’ll try to develop him and he’ll get better with every game.”
