Ilfracombe Town will be hoping Stan Paxton can soon reproduced his cup goalscoring form in the Toolstation Western League.
Paxton netted his sixth goal of the season in Tuesday’s 4-1 Devon St Luke’s Cup defeat at Torquay United – but all six goals have come in cup ties.
It is not the first time Paxton has made a flying start in knockout football but not the league.
With Barnstaple Town in 2011-12, he scored five times in FA Cup, FA Vase and Les Phillips Cup ties before the end of November but did not find the net in a league match until March. He scored twice more in the last two league games of a season in which he was often used as a centre back.
Ilfracombe, with one win from five Premier Division outings, will want Paxton to break his league duck much sooner than March – preferably at Bridport tomorrow (3pm).
Since the Dorset side were promoted in 2011 they have won three meetings with Ilfracombe. The Bluebirds’ best result was a 2-2 draw, with a double strike from Tom Rossiter, at Marlborough Park in April 2012.
Bridport are five places and two points above Ilfracombe. In their latest outing they conceded a last-minute goal to lose 2-1 at Brislington on Tuesday night.
