ILFRACOMBE TOWN found their form to beat St Austell 4-1 in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.
Having begun the season with 3-1 and 5-0 defeats in the Toolstation Western League, Ilfracombe took out their frustration on Carlsberg South West Peninsula League opposition this afternoon.
Goals from Ian Cockwill, Steve Holland and Stan Paxton put Combe 3-0 up inside 48 minutes.
And after Dan Nancarrow, the St Austell player-manager, pulled a goal back for his side, Ed Yeo restored Ilfracombe’s three-goal cushion.
Full back Cockwill drove home from eight yards on 15 minutes after Paxton’s shot was blocked by keeper Jason Chapman and St Austell were unable to clear the danger.
Holland made it 2-0 with a fine individual goal on 36 minutes. The midfielder went round the outside of two defenders and fired low past Chapman from an angle.
Three minutes into the second half, the St Austell defence left their keeper exposed as they pushed up and Paxton ran clear to finish with a low shot.
Nancarrow gave his side a glimmer of hope when he converted Chris Reski’s right-wing cross on the hour.
But Yeo put the tie beyond doubt 13 minutes from time with a 12-yard drive that went under Chapman.
It was a well-deserved victory for Ilfracombe who will now go to another Peninsula League side, Plymouth Parkway, in the preliminary round on August 31.
