The Westcountry is home to some of the best places to stay in the UK, according to the latest edition of a leading travellers' guide.
The Old Rectory Hotel, Martinhoe on Exmoor National Park is named Devon hotel of the year in the 2014 edition of The Good Hotel Guide.
The 17th Century Georgian manor house, Ennys in St Hilary, was also named Cornish B&B of the Year in what is recognised as the leading independent guide to hotels of character and quality in Great Britain and Ireland.
The Devon hotel and the Cornish bed & breakfast both received a César award – named after César Ritz, the most celebrated of all hoteliers, and heralded as the Oscars of the hotel industry.
Huw Rees, co-owner of the Old Rectory Hotel, said: "We are delighted to receive this award from the Good Hotel Guide and are particularly thrilled as our first entry in the Guide was just last year. The special value of the award is that it is based on reader reports and anonymous inspections.
"We aim to do the simple things well and create a 'house in the country' feel for our guests. Five years on, 2013 has been our best-ever year; this is the cherry on the icing on the cake."
Desmond Balmer, joint editor of the Good Hotel Guide, said: "Huw Rees and Sam Prosser, who have given their old rectory a smart interior, run it with good humour and great attention to the needs of guests. Huw Rees's cooking is much praised."
There are a total of 88 main entries listed for Devon and Cornwall or those hotels, bed and breakfasts and inns rated as the best of their type in Great Britain and Ireland by the guide's authors.
Gill Charlton, owner of Ennys Manor House, said: "I am thrilled to receive one of the highly coveted Cesar awards from The Good Hotel Guide. It's the only truly independent British guide with honest reports based on unsolicited reviews from customers and visits by professional reviewers who stay anonymously as a couple and are difficult to unmask, which is as it should be."
Desmond Balmer, joint editor of the guide, added: "Gill Charlton, who bought the house in a down-trodden state, has lavished as much care on looking after her guests as she has on restoring the building. A seasoned traveller, she understands what guests need and provides warm, generous hospitality."
The Good Hotel Guide nominates 10 hotels every year as what are considered to be "outstanding" in their class.
