HOLSWORTHY'S resurgence in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League continued with a 2-1 win at Vospers Oak Villa.

After losing their first 11 games in first division (west), they have now won three of their last four.

John O'Donoghue and Mike Cornew scored the goals and keeper Chris Pearce played his part with a superb double save in the first half.

Following last week's convincing win against Mousehole, Holworthy avenged the 2-0 defeat to Vospers a fortnight ago.

Steve Lewis, the manager, said: "Three wins out of four is not bad. It wasn't as good as last week but a win is a win. It wasn't a good game to watch but I would think it was a good battle if you were on the field."

Holsworthy were up for the battle with veterans Ian Rowe and Roger Bonaparte leading the line ahead of a youthful midfield led by Nick Aplin and Cornew.

For the second week running, they were boosted by the experience and leadership of James Mayne in defence.

Helping out at his former club, the Ilfracombe Town player has brought the best out of O'Donoghue.

"For someone who is dedicated to Ilfracombe and living in Bideford, it's nice he wants to come along," said Lewis.

O'Donoghue went forward for a corner to head his second goal of the season.

James Hoblin, who started the season as a Holsworthy player, then grabbed the equaliser after a slice from Pearce.

Rowe struck a post and there were chances for Bonaparte and Ryan Lee before Cornew's decisive goal 20 minutes from time.

The fortune that had been missing for the Magpies in the early months of the season, made a welcome return.

Cornew broke from midfield and when his shot was saved by the keeper it ricocheted back off him for a tap-in.

Having looked towards the bottom for so long, suddenly there is optimism Holsworthy can push towards mid-table.
