MAJOR Heidi Spencer has become part of the first ever all-female Army team to enter and complete the Fastnet offshore yacht race.
Heidi, 38, from Barnstaple, is part of an eight-person team who competed in the difficult 45th biennial Fastnet yacht race on Redcoat, a Sigma 38.
Heidi said: "The race was not quite as challenging as I anticipated as the weather was quite kind to us, but physically, we have all taken an utter battering. You have to be strong mentally and physically,"
The team came 57th out of 82 in their class and are hoping this will inspire other women in the Army to participate in sailing in the future.
"It was all hard but for me it was coming up on deck in the pitch black and we were screaming along, you can't see any other boats.
"It's like driving without your headlights on, with your windows and doors wide open and you could fall out at any time – exhilarating but challenging at the same time "
Heidi is currently posted at Army Headquarters in Andover, Hampshire as part of Personnel Operations.
