Joe Grimley scored the only goal as Bideford reserves beat Ilfracombe Town reserves in the Torridge Cup preliminary round last night.
The Robins were given a stern test by their North Devon League Premier Division rivals at the Sports Ground, edging through 1-0 thanks to Grimley's first-half strike.
Nathan Bate hit a post and Jake Shambrook was denied by a brilliant save from Combe keeper Rob Holmes in the early exchanges.
Grimley then showed excellent control and followed up to score after his initial effort was saved.
Ilfracombe took the game to Bideford in the second half but were unable to force an equaliser past Peter Ellis.
Bideford are at home again in the first round against the winners of the tie between Morwenstow and Halwill.
