The funeral of a 97-year-old who passed away earlier this month is being held in Combe Martin today.
Jean Oxley lived in the village but died at Edenmore Nursing Home in Ilfracombe on February 6.
She was the wife of the late Roy Oxley who was an officer in the airforce.
He was stationed in Singapore at the end of the Second World War and he and Mrs Oxley only narrowly escaped with their lives.
Philippa Shone who works for Andy's Cabs in Combe Martin used to drive Mrs Oxley to various events and remembers her fondly.
She said: "She was absolutely brilliant. We saw her quite a bit. She had such a sad life but she was always so happy.
"I used to pick her up from bingo and she would still have her make-up on. She always made the effort. She was a lovely person and such a character."
Her funeral service is being held at 4pm today in Combe Martin Parish Church.
