SEA ANGLING sport is picking up with some fine specimen fish landed.
Combe Martin Sea Angling Club (SAC) members have been enjoying some fine sport with Ross Stanway topping the catches with a personal best smoothound scaling 15lb 4oz.
Club-mate Ali Laird also targeted smoothound and had catches of 12lb 8oz, 12lb 2oz, 10lb 7oz and 9lb 4oz in one session.
Graham Snow, who has fished with Combe Martin for many years, was thrilled with a fine bass of 10lb 2½oz from a local beach.
I ventured out to a rock mark with the big rods after several months fishing on the lighter side for summer species.
From the first cast the rod tip dipped over within minutes, signalling interest in the whole-squid bait. A minute or so later a bull huss of 9lb 1oz came protesting through the surging waters to land upon the rocks.
Kane Redmore won Barnstaple Triple Hook Club's Junior Open Flounder Match with a fish of 1lb 2¾oz, beating Levi Beer (1lb) and Jack Toleman who was one-eighth of an ounce behind.
In the Ladies' Open Match, Joan Cairns was the winner for the fourth consecutive year, landing a flounder of 1lb 4oz. The runner-up was Levi Beer with a 1lb catch and third was Yasmin Beer on 12oz.
Triple Hook Club's latest match at Jennets Reservoir was won by Robbie Hancock with a 22lb bag that included a carp of 16lb. Dennis Toleman was second with 14lb and Tony Burslem third with 11lb.
Big catfish have been testing tackle at Angler's Paradise where Paul Rose caught a huge fish weighing 54lb 12oz from the specimen catfish lake.
The complex's Eldorado Lake is reckoned to be one of the country's best venues for catching a first catfish. Aaron Bunning enjoyed a great session, landing the biggest catfish from the lake so far this year at 38lb 4oz. Aaron also landed cats of 16lb and 7lb.
Robbie Wilberforce, 14, had a 48-hour session on the Main Lake, catching 18 carp – five of more than 20lb and the best 24lb. The best was a catfish of 44lb.
Stafford Moor's Beatties Specimen Carp Lake has produced some tremendous catches. In 48-hour sessions, Luke Pursey caught 26 double-figure carp to 25lb 8oz, Kevin Richards had 28 carp to 26lb 8oz and Alex Charlton 30 carp to just over 20lb.
John Firth is the latest angler to land Charlotte the mirror carp from Furzebray Lakes at a weight of 38lb 4oz, smashing his personal best by more than 20lb.
Fly-fishers continue to land big brown trout at Blakewell Fishery where Richard Spencer, from Appledore, caught a fine specimen of 9lb.
At Wimbleball Reservoir, anglers have been averaging 3.1 fish per rod day.Wistlandpound fly-fishers held their Beeney Trophy match at the venue, which was won by Matt Kingdon with a five-fish limit bag of 8lb 10oz. Runner-up Colin Combe had the only other limit bag and Nigel Bird was third with a brace of trout for 3lb 10oz.
Brown trout fishing has been excellent at picturesque Bratton Water where Owen Prior and his friend both landed four-fish limit bags of all brown trout weighing more than 16lb 8oz.
The water has also yielded several blue trout between 2lb and 3lb. Small imitative patterns have proved most successful in the lake's clear waters.
