Captain Murderer And The Morecambe Mermaid

Plough Arts Centre, Torrington

Thursday, April 19, 8pm

CAPTAIN Murderer And The Morecambe Mermaid promises to be a sinister visual feast, a fast-moving parade of puppets and masks, illusions and projections, burlesque queens and geeks.

The disturbing piece of escapism, performed by Captain Mermaid theatre company at the Plough next week, explores the real, hard lives of historical fairground freaks. It tells how these people were trafficked and exploited by their masters and feared and discriminated against by the people who came to stare.

It shows how, amid the declining fortunes of the British seaside, a troupe is forced into increasingly outrageous and demeaning public performances. Meanwhile, alcoholism, drug addiction and sheer desperation tighten their grip. Tickets: £10 (full), £8 (concession), £7 (Plough supporter). Box office: 01805 624624. There will be a puppet workshop for adults (15 years and above) from 6 to 7pm. Cost: £5.
