Exeter High Street was completely shut off last night after a suspicious package was found inside a shop in Princesshay.
Police have confirmed that staff in New Look reported the package and a special police unit was sent in.
All shops in the area were shut because of the incident.
At around 8pm, police confirmed that non suspicious items were removed from the shop and the High Street was re-opened.
A representative of Devon and Cornwall police said:
"At 18.24hours Police were alerted by staff to a suspicious package in their shop which is within Princesshay shopping area Exeter.
"The shop was closed at the time of the call as were the majority of premises in the area.
"As a precautionary measure a cordon was placed around the store and a specialist police searched trained officer attended.
"This officer removed a bag containing non suspicious items from the store and the cordons were removed.
The city centre around Princesshay shopping centre is now back to normal.
"Police would like to thank the members of the public who were inconvenienced for their patience and understanding."
