MORE THAN 500 revellers descended on Brimlands playing field for Ilfracombe Rugby Club's annual bonfire and fireworks event last week.

Despite wintry conditions and a very muddy pitch, adults and children gathered for the event which took place last Friday.

For years, Ilfracombe Rugby Club was famed for its virtual bonfires where organisers projected video of a fire onto a large screen and blasted warm air towards the crowd from industrial heaters for effect.

The idea was to protect the pitch for the following day's game.

However, the club decided to ditch the projector in favour of a real fire two years ago.

The bonfire now takes place in a skip which is off the main rugby field.

The event also boasted a spectacular fireworks display, along with music and a disco which went on into the night.

Ilfracombe Rugby Club chairman Miles Higginson said: "It's been a great evening. It's nice to see so many families out and having a good time.

"The fireworks display was fantastic and everyone seemed to have a good night."
