EMERGENCY measures are being put in place by two councils to stop a rubbish dump spilling into the Torridge Estuary.
It is believed around £3,000 will be spent by Devon County Council and Torridge District Council to extend the rock armour surrounding Northam Burrows.
The work is due to be carried out on November 5 and will last between 2-3 days.
Concerns were raised by walkers and Royal North Devon Golf Club, which is on the burrows, last week after high tides and stormy weather increased erosion on the edge of burrows exposing rubbish from a former rubbish dump that closed nearly 20 years ago.
A spokesman from Torridge District Council said: "The work could start at the end of next week when several more boulders will be added to the existing ones and will extend up past where the tip is believed to be.
"The sand dunes will also be layered to make the area safer for walkers and any exposed rubbish will be disposed of."
