On Thursday, May 2, residents across North Devon and Torridge will be asked to elect a county councillor for their area.

To help you make a well-informed decision on election day, the Journal has contacted all of the candidates and asked why you should vote for them.

We also asked them to submit a video to support their application and asked them a few fun questions which have thrown up some very interesting answers.

Below are the responses from candidates standing in Northam:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAVID BERRYMAN - Lib Dem:

Why should you vote for me?

I work for Devonshire pine and oak. I have worked there for over seven years.

I have been involved with the Liberals and Lib Dems since 1974.

I am determined to serve this ward and give regular reports back.

I would hope to get better transport and roads and try and get work for the shipyard by working with central government.

If elected I would look after the elderly and vulnerable and make sure Northam and Appledore libraries stay open.

I would protect the burrows and golf course from eroding and fight against Knapp House development going ahead because of the environment and breeding grounds nearby and other developers when the younger generations cannot get on the housing ladder and it is not fair on the locals.

I will hope to put more police on the streets. I am your only choice and I will not stop campaigning for local people.

QUESTIONS:

Occupation: Machine operative

If you could have one super power what would it be: Super sight to look into the future

Most embarrassing moment: Can’t think of one.

Favourite place in North Devon: Northam, it is so quiet and peaceful.

If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be: My picture of me and Olympic rower Helen Glover

If you could invite any three people to a dinner party who would they be: Alexander the Great, David Lloyd George and William Gladstone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAMES ANDREW CRAIGIE - Labour:

QUESTIONS:

Occupation: Citizens Advice Bureau Gateway Adviser

If you could have one super power what would it be: To give people the strength to fight injustice, so that no matter how rich or how poor all people have the justice they deserve.

Most embarrassing moment: Either winning the business studies prize at school or getting an A in A-level economics without attending the course, I’ll never live it down.

Favourite place in North Devon: Westward Ho! Beach, the vastness of the vista expands the mind and frees thinking from the confines of everyday life.

If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be: My Alsatian dog

If you could invite any three people to a dinner party who would they be: Karl Marx, the Rochdale Pioneers and the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANDREW JOHN EASTMAN - Conservative:

Why should you vote for me?

I, Andrew Eastman, as a candidate for this forthcoming County Council election wish to inform all readers that my passion in my local community has resulted in 20 years plus of dedicated service on my local Town Council.

I have now recently come to the end of four years of service on the County Council.

In order to continue the level of success that I have achieved, I seek the people of Northam, Appledore, Orchard Hill and Westward Ho! to vote for me so that I may continue in building my reputation of getting things done.

I will continue to vote for keeping our council tax down.

I will always support better care for the elderly. I am currently working to deliver affordable housing for local needs in my area.

I will always support my electorate, irrespective of their political views.

We currently live in difficult times and must pull together to help each other.

I will always give my full support to everybody in need of help and I will do my best to achieve this.

Please give me your support by voting for me on May 2.

QUESTIONS:

Occupation: Full-time councillor

If you could have one super power what would it be: To end starvation in the world.

Most embarrassing moment: I have tried very hard to think of one but I do not have one.

Favourite place in North Devon: Appledore because I have never wanted to live anywhere else.

If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be: After saving our two cats I would return to save my wife (my wife agrees with this).

If you could invite any three people to a dinner party who would they be: Winston Churchill, Rudyard Kipling and Horatio Nelson.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PETER GRAHAM HAMES - Green Party:

Why should you vote for me?

The Greens are the only party facing up to the serious implications of climate change, resource scarcity and environmental damage.

Applying the Party’s policies to the County Council’s responsibilities, under transport, for example, I would push for reduction of car use, better public transport and a network of cycling and walking routes.

I would also support a rail link to Bideford.

In education I would fight for better energy conservation in schools, clean energy from renewables and more recycling.

I would also call for dramatic reduction of energy use by the County Council and would strongly support local renewable energy schemes which involve local communities.

I would push for waste reduction, re-use and higher recycling rates, and I would oppose incineration as environmentally damaging.

I would particularly argue for job creation in the area of re-manufacturing new products from recycled materials.

Regarding planning I would defend our beautiful countryside against development and I would push for the reduction of carbon emissions as fundamental to County planning strategy.

To carry out these policies and others, a proper public service structure is vital and I would fight disastrous cuts in local government.

QUESTIONS:

Occupation: Book seller

If you could have one super power what would it be: To convince everyone in the world that their well-being and the well-being of the planet are the same thing.

Most embarrassing moment: Admitting my age in a local newspaper.

Favourite place in North Devon: My vegetable garden because growing vegetables is fun, creative and relaxing (assuming they grow, of course).

If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be: My piano.

If you could invite any three people to a dinner party who would they be: William Cobbett, George Bernard Shaw and Barbara Castle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHRIS LEATHER - UKIP:

Why should you vote for me?

The only party today that speaks with the voice of most people in this country is UKIP.

I have a great deal of experience as a local councillor, having served 12 years on Bideford Town, I am now in my tenth year on Torridge District Council where I represent Orchard Hill.

The views and concerns of all in Northam must be considered when making decisions, something I have always strived to do.

Northam, Appledore, Westward Ho! and Orchard Hill deserve a strong, unbiased voice at County Hall.

UKIP is not just about leaving the EU or unfettered immigration, but also common sense policies on the services we expect from our County Council.

EDUCATION: We support Grammar Schools, the retention of rural schools and more choice for parents.

ECONOMY & EMPLOYMENT: County could do far more in tackling youth unemployment. Support for businesses and tourism needs improving.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE: The care of the elderly is of critical concern. People with learning disabilities are a particular interest of mine.

POLICE: Anti-social behaviour is a crime; it makes people’s lives a misery.

Drunken, fouled mouthed and abusive behaviour in our streets must be stopped.

Please give me your support and vote, together we can make a real difference, your vote matters.

QUESTIONS:

Occupation: Retired

If you could have one super power what would it be: The power to heal physical and mental disabilities.

Most embarrassing moment: Years ago an ex-girlfriend asked me how my mother was. Without thinking I asked her how her mother was, completely forgetting she had recently died.

Favourite place in North Devon: Abbotsham Cliffs, the views from Greencliff and The Big Skies are fantastic.

If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be: My collection of recorded music

If you could invite any three people to a dinner party who would they be: Winston Churchill, Admiral Lord Nelson and Queen Elizabeth I.

It is astonishing that Cllr Leather ends his video by asking for our vote for him to represent the people of Appledore, Westward Ho!, Northam and Orchard Hill when 3 months earlier he blatantly ignored the massive local feeling in these areas about the Knapp House development scheme by arguing vigorously for it and voting for it on the plans committee. His plea for our vote to represent us beggars belief. Some may be tempted to vote for him because he is standing under the UKIP banner but local councils need councillors who will listen to the local people and represent their views at council. By voting for a representative councillor our voice will be heard on how our local environment develops.
