A MAN who was discovered by police asleep under a duvet in his car after downing vodka has been fined £185.
Steven Nengas, of Edward Street, Glamorgan, pleaded guilty to being in charge of a vehicle while above the alcohol limit at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The court heard how Nengas, who was on holiday in Ilfracombe with his family, had had a row with his partner on the night of September 20 and had taken off in his silver Vauxhall Corsa along the B3230, before parking up at Muddiford.
Rod Ball, for the defence, told the court that his client had had a few swigs of neat vodka on the side of the road where he parked the car, and then got back into the car to ‘bed down’ for the night.
“He originally planned to drive home to South Wales, but realised he could not abandon his partner, so he decided to sleep off the alcohol and go back in the morning.”
When police discovered Nengas, they smelt alcohol on his breath and felt that his tyres were still warm and concluded that he had not been parked for very long and so they arrested him.
Nengas gave a reading of 66 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
Nengas’s driving licence was endorsed with ten penalty points for the offence, and he was fined £185.
He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85, and a £15 victim surcharge.
