A teenager who died after his car veered off the A396 and plummeted down a 40ft embankment near Bampton on Friday has been named locally as Luke Lyons.
The alarm was raised at around 4.50pm after the car was discovered down a 40ft steep embankment just off the A396 near to Bickleigh Wood.
It’s thought the car came off the carriageway in icy conditions. After leaving the road the vehicle dropped approximately 40ft down a steep slope and crashed into some trees.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
Although police have not confirmed the man’s identity, he has been named locally as Bampton teenager Luke Lyons.
Formal identification of the body will take place today.
A missing person appeal was launched for Mr Lyons after he failed to turn up for work in Bideford on Friday morning.
It is understood he usually drives his silver Clio van to work, often along the A396 from Bampton, past East Anstey and onto the A361 North Devon Link Road at South Molton.
Messages posted on Twitter over the weekend appear to pay tribute to the 19-year-old.
