Dozens of North Devon emergency service workers will be recognised at an awards ceremony including those who rescued a family from dangerous flood waters near South Molton last year.

Personnel from the fire service, RNLI, the police and a local farmer will all receive the Chief Fire Officer’s commendations at the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service North Devon Group Command awards ceremony on Friday.

The rescue of a family of three from the River Taw at Umberleigh on the night of 23 December 2012 saw firefighters, fire control operators, the RNLI Flood Rescue Team, police officers, the police helicopter crew and a brave member of the public all worked together to rescue the three people who had become trapped in deep and fast flowing floodwater.

Friday’s ceremony will recognise how this operation was carried out in extremely hazardous circumstances and also how the bravery and professionalism of those involved resulted in a successful life-saving result.

The ceremony will also focus on the unsung heroes of the emergency services.

Other staff will be recognised for long and dedicated service and outstanding commitment, at the ceremony to be held at Bideford Town Hall .

North Devon Group Commander Neil Blackburn said: “I am privileged to have this opportunity to be able to recognise emergency responders and some members of the public for all the hard work they do in the community and also for courageous acts, beyond the call of duty, that have resulted in the saving of life.”
