ONE woman from Dolton made it her mission to raise cash for charity after her sister was diagnosed with cancer.

Jenna Lee, 27, organised the Purple Ball for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) after her sister, Shelley Langbridge, 29, was diagnosed with Follicular Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Shelley, who lives in Okehampton, was treated in February 2010 to remove a lump underneath her arm. Recently she was diagnosed with lymphoma in her knee and endures chemotherapy sessions every three weeks.

Jenna said she wanted to give something back to the unit following the help staff at ELF have given over the years. She said: "The unit have been very supportive to my sister and the rest of the family.

"We decided to organise the Purple Ball at the beginning of the year to raise money for the ELF unit. We put on a three course meal with music as well as a silent auction and raffle.

"We incorporated purple in to the theme because the flower, which is the symbol for lymphoma, is purple."

Jenna said the event was a sell out with 150 people arriving in their finery pledging support. She said: "The atmosphere was amazing. People enjoyed themselves and the dance floor was full. Everyone really got into the spirit with the silent auction and raffle. We are hoping to hold the Purple Ball every two years. It takes a lot of work to put an event like that together."

Jenna said the whole family have pulled together. She said: "We are a very close family and it has brought us even closer, if that's possible. Obviously it's very hard to deal with as we know that all we can do is support Shelley."

Jenna organised the charity ball with the help of Teresa Paddon, Nikki Paddon, Tabitha Cassels, Selina Woollacott, Beth Pengelly and Donna Jennings.
