The Pophams will be asked to lead Barnstaple and Pilton into the upper reaches of the Francis Clark Devon Cricket League B Division.

After two steady mid-table campaigns, captain Steve Moore believes his side can “compete at the higher end”.

Big seasons for pace bowler Jack Popham, who spent the winter with Gloucestershire’s academy, and his batsman brother Tom will be required.

“Jack has put on a yard of pace and is one of the quickest bowlers in the B Division,” said Moore. “Equally, Tom is one of the best batsmen in the B Division.

“I will looking for him to contribute six to seven hundred runs and for Jack to set the aim of 30 to 40 wickets, which would put us in good stead for what we want to do.

“I want Jack to get a few five-fors and make an impact. He has got to produce that for Barnstaple and the rest will fall into place.

“With the progress we have made over the past two seasons, I’m hoping this season we can go one step further.”
