Motorists travelling on the M5 are currently facing lengthy delays after a man, dressed as spiderman, dangerously scaled a bridge in a Fathers4Justice protest.
Police have closed junction 25 (Taunton) after the man, who it is understood is in his thirties and from the Wellington area, climbed the bridge over the motorway at around 8.20am.
It is understood he is a campaigner from rights group Fathers4Justice and has displayed banners from the bridge.
The incident has caused reported tailbacks of over one mile in both directions on the M5.
Police have also been forced to close Toneway, the main route in and out of Taunton town centre, which has caused tailbacks onto the M5.
Police negotiators are currently at the scene and are trying to talk the man down.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “A man is on the footbridge and police have closed a section of the road as a safety precaution while they talk to him.”
Motorists travelling both northbound and southbound are being asked to avoid the Taunton junction and instead leave or join the motorway at junction 26 (Wellington) or junction 24 (Bridgwater).
Dozens of people have taken to Twitter to share news of the incident.
