THE trial of a Romanian hotel worker from Ilfracombe accused of rape has been delayed.
Nelu Popa, 36, was due to have faced a jury at Exeter Crown Court later this month but an important witness is unable to attend.
Popa, of St Brannock’s Road, Ilfracombe, denies three counts of raping the same victim after a party at a hotel in the resort on April 9 last year.
Mr David Sapiecha, prosecuting, said an important Crown witness is no longer available for the original trial date and there was no alternative but to stand down the trial.
His case was adjourned for a new trial date by Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, the Recorder of Exeter.
Popa was not required to be present for the short hearing at Exeter Crown Court and remains on bail.
