JAMIE CLARKE'S late free-kick gave Grimsby Town a 1-0 win over Royal Racing FC Montegnee in the Errea South West Challenge Cup tonight.

The students from Belgium had been defeated 5-0 by Yeovil Town on Monday, but they showed what they are capable of against opponents from Coca-Cola League Two at Barnstaple's Mill Road.

Goalkeeper Nick Colgan was making his first appearance for Grimsby after signing from Sunderland this week, and he was called on to make a number of saves in the first half.

Nick Hegarty went close for the Mariners when he fired a free-kick over.

Colgan was the only Grimsby player to feature in both halves as boss Mike Newell sent on all 10 substitutes during the break.

One of those subs, Clarke, curled in the winning goal in the closing minutes.

The result puts Royal Racing out of the cup. Grimsby meet Yeovil in Torrington on Friday (7pm) for a place in the semi-finals.
