AN outline application for more than eight hectares of employment land and 150 houses at Chivenor Cross has been approved.
The application was discussed by members of North Devon Council’s planning committee yesterday.
The application was previously deferred by the council on July 10 for a number of reasons.
They were to received evidence about the employment use, to address the need for 150 houses in the area, to consider community responses in relation to the local plan and to seek a highways plan for Braunton.
Five members spoke against the application including Andrea Davis, ward member for Heanton Punchardon, who does not sit on the planning committee.
She accused the council of being “cloak and dagger” in providing evidence for the application, particularly with reference to the need for employment land.
Members also discussed deferring the application until after the draft local plan has been approved as it is premature.
But Mike Kelly, planning manager at the council, advise against this. He said: “Arguments that an application is premature is unlikely to justify a refusal other than in exceptional circumstances.”
Members eventually voted in favour of the application eight to four.
