AN adoption charity is urging North Devon families to consider adoption as figures show there has been a dramatic decrease in adoption inquires over the past year.

Families for Children is an adoption charity based in South Devon.

So far this year only two families from North Devon have approached the charity and last year a total of 22 families got in touch, making up only 12 per cent of all inquires in Devon.

Katey McDonald, marketing co-ordinator for Families for Children, said: "We are sure that many people who have considered adoption may have some ideas in their heads about why they are not able to adopt which stops them coming forward and we are keen to dispel all the myths that surround adoption."

One family from Northam was approved to adopt in August.

Alice and Rob Shaw, have been married for nearly ten years and have two birth children Maisy, 8, and Ruben, 5.

Alice, 36, said the adoption had always been on the cards for the couple but they didn't start discussing it seriously until 18 months ago.

She said: "We wanted to add to our family but we don't need to have a child ourselves because we know there are plenty of children out there needing a home and family.

"We have been so lucky having our first two.

"We have talked to our family about it and kept the children involved the whole time. Although it has been a lengthy process it has been really positive all the way through.

"It has been interesting for Rob and I as a couple because we have found things out about each other that perhaps we wouldn't know otherwise. We have learnt a lot about each other.

"The whole time it is a real fact finding process but the social workers made it so easy, we never felt like we were being quizzed.

"It is daunting waiting for an extra child to join our family and we don't know at this stage who it might be. We haven't been too specific but we know they will have to be two years younger than Ruben to not upset the family dynamics."

Paul Jewels, 66, from Landkey, is a trustee of Families for Children and adopted twins 18 years ago. He said: "Adopting is the most rewarding process, stressful but also exciting.

"There are so many children out there needing homes and the process is so much more open now."
