AN application which could have made way for more events and coverage of sports in Barnstaple Pannier Market has been deferred.

North Devon Council’s planning committee discussed an application – submitted by the council itself – for a change of use from solely retail to events venue.

However Christopher Punt objected to the application, raising concerns about a lack of toilet facilities and fire safety as well as the public highway which runs through the market.

He said: “I object to this application but I support the wish it make better use of it, if it is lawful and safe.”

Councillor Richard Edgell moved deferral of the application which was voted eight to four.

Good to see some common sense prevailing over this issue. Wouldn't the leisure centre be a better place for these activities?
