SCHOOL leavers looking to enter the creative and digital marketing industries have the opportunity to apply for 12-month paid apprenticeships through the Creative Pioneers Challenge 2014.

Run by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the challenge gives school leavers the chance to win work and on-the-job training leading to an apprenticeship qualification at IPA member agencies, including Bray Leino, at Filleigh and Bristol, and at McCann and Mason Zimbler, both in Bristol.

The scheme is open to school or college leavers, aged 16-23, with a can-do attitude, native digital and social media skills, and qualifications no higher than A levels or equivalent.

Past winners include Jamie Mead who entered the competition in 2012 and won a place at Bray Leino in Filleigh.

Jamie said: "The 'earning and learning' phrase is associated a lot with apprenticeships and I think it's great – learning and improving myself and my skills while earning real life valuable experience and getting paid to do it – not much beats that. I would definitely recommend apprenticeships and encourage young people that are still making up their minds – go for it."

For Alan Mead, head of early career and skills development at Bray Leino, getting involved in the Creative Pioneers programme had clear benefits: "Over the past two years the benefits of this scheme to our business have been clear. We've taken on eager young apprentices who have added value to the business right from the word go. They've been given every chance to become fully-fledged junior employees at the end of their placement, and having spent that time familiarising themselves with every aspect of our business, they're able to hit the ground running at a full sprint. The scheme allows us to build long-term strength in depth into our talent pool while supporting the future of our industry by nurturing young talent."

To take part in the Creative Pioneers programme and vie for an apprenticeship, school leavers must apply before March 31. Full details at ww.wcreativepioneers.co.uk.
