A PARODY on a popular costume drama is entertainment at the Plough on Friday. Following a sell-out Edinburgh premiere and a West End season, impressionist Luke Kempner brings his solo show, The Only Way Is Downton to the Torrington venue.
Building on the original scenario of his YouTube hit video Downstairs At Downton, Luke has created an original story in which the characters of Downton Abbey are in crisis and have to call upon modern celebrities in their appeal to save the Dowager's country pile from certain closure.
As celebrities start appearing at the Abbey, cultures clash and eras hilariously collide.
"It's the Christmas special that wasn't actually on – the late version maybe," said Luke. "But there's 40 different characters and around 20 are Downton. I do impressions of lots of celebs – I don't want to give anything away but they're all very well known.
"There's more to go on if you're a Downton fan but there's plenty there for those who aren't. I try to impersonate a mixture of people of who haven't been done and those who have – the zeitgeist people and the old familiar ones. Above all I try to tell stories in a funny way."
Writer and performer Luke Kempner has appeared in the UK tours of Avenue Q and Les Misérables.
The Only Way is Downton is at the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington on Friday, March 7, 8pm. Tickets: £13 (adult), £11 (concession), £9 (Plough supporter). Box office: 01805 624624.
