POLICE are warning boat owners to be vigilant following a spate of thefts in Instow over the last month.
Officers believe the offenders are using a boat at night and stealing items from other vessels moored in the Torridge estuary.
Three thefts have been reported to police in the last couple of weeks and items including boat motors and fishing equipment have been allegedly stolen.
PCSO Jess Meaker said police had stepped up patrols in the area.
She said: “I am in close contact with the yacht club and am trying to raise awareness of such thefts and the need for owners to implement crime prevention measures.
“I am organising a crime prevention initiative, including property marking, which should take place in the next 2-4 weeks.
“I am confident this will help stem the rise of this type of crime. In the meantime I have arranged for extra patrols in the area at the relevant times.”
“I am happy to speak to anyone about their crime prevention arrangements,” she added.
Anyone with information about these thefts should contact police on 101 or by contacting contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
