A thatched property and two outbuildings in Ashreigney were destroyed by a fire on Sunday.
Several fire crews from Chulmleigh, Hatherleigh and Torrington were called to the workshop fire just after 11am.
Extra crews from South Molton, Barnstaple, North Tawton and Bideford also attended.
The blaze in the two-storey building was extinguished later in the afternoon.
The thatched roof and the first floor of the property were destroyed by the fire. The rest of the property was damaged by smoke and water.
Ralph Johnson, 66, saw the smoke from his Burrington home.
Ralph said: "My wife spotted the smoke. It was bad news, really dire. There was still smoke coming up as it got dark.
"It is heart breaking to see that happening and not be able to help."
The fire is believed to be accidental.
