A BIDEFORD woman stole three four-packs of Carlsberg Special Brew from a garage in the space of a week, a court has heard.

Kelly Anne Reardon, of Union Close, Bideford, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft when she appeared at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Karen Ball, for the prosecution, told the court how staff at Handy Cross Blights Motors checked CCTV on December 11 after noticing stock was missing.

Reardon was seen on CCTV picking up a four-pack of Carlsberg Special Brew, putting it into her bag, covering it and leaving the store without paying.

Staff recognised Reardon had also been into the store the day before, so checked the CCTV footage for December 10, which also showed her taking a four-pack of Special Brew.

CCTV was also checked for December 7 after staff remembered she had been into the store on that day, and she was seen to do the same thing on that occasion.

Each pack of special brew was worth £9.56.

Zara Svensson, for the defence, said that when her client had committed the offences she had been sectioned and had been medicated for her alcohol problem without success.

She said that Reardon was now receiving support from the Quay Centre, and was feeling much better.

She said: “She now feels she is not going to commit any further offences.”

Presiding magistrate Robin Hagley said he had listened carefully to the problems Reardon had been facing, but it did not alter the fact that she stole on three occasions in a short space of time.

Reardon was ordered to pay £28.68 in compensation to Blights Motors, and a £15 victim surcharge.

She was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

Funny how she didn't want help when she was stealing super strength lager, but when it comes to court she suddenly starts receiving help! typical benefit scrounger.

How can she have been sectioned at the time of the theft!?!? Ms Svensson has surely been misquoted as these offences didn't happen in a psychiatric unit! mentally ill or not, alcoholic or not, surely this woman was not so incapable that she didn't know right from wrong? Lenient sentences only serve to sanction reoffending - our magistrates need their heads examined.
