A FIRST-HALF goal from Matt Andrew was not enough for Bideford in a 3-1 defeat at Bedford Town.
Andrew latched on to a back heel from Kevin Squire to clip the opening goal but the Robins were punished for defensive mistakes in the Evo-Stik League Southern game.
Squire fired another chance over before Bedford equalised when a shot was parried by Paul Hider.
The hosts bundled their second goal past Hider before half time and they added the third from the penalty spot after a foul by Connor Clifford.
James Richards and Clifford both had shots saved and Matt Hockley had an overhead effort cleared off the line as Bideford chased the game.
Bideford, third from bottom of the premier division, are back at home on Tuesday night when they host Chippenham Town (7.45pm)
Barnstaple Town suffered an embarrassing 10-3 defeat at Bishop Sutton in the preliminary round of the Toolstation Western League's Les Phillips Cup.
Barum travelled without any substitutes and they were put to the sword in the second half after Ethan Phillips went off injured.
Goalkeeper Darren Rose did his best to limit the damage but could do nothing to prevent goals from Pete Sheppard (two), Jordan Metters (two), Billy Downes, Will Hailston (two) and Rob Smart (three).
Ollie Knowles, Kyle Bassett (penalty) and Stuart Cameron scored for the visitors.
Ilfracombe Town, the cup winners in 2011, started this season's bid with a 2-1 extra-time win at Wells City thanks to Ed Yeo's double strike. The match was goalless after 90 minutes.
Witheridge beat St Austell 2-0 in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League with second-half goals from Tom Edworthy and Steve Ebdy.
In the Graddon Vending Devon Premier Cup, Appledore won 2-1 at Thorverton and Holsworthy were 1-0 winners at Crediton United.
The second round's star performers, however, were Boca Seniors who beat Beer Albion 11-0 at Mill Road.
