BETTY HORWOOD and Minnie Day just missed out on a place in the final of the Bowls Devon Ladies' Over-70 Pairs, writes Tony Atkins.

The Bideford bowlers were beaten 16-15 in the semi-finals at Babbacombe, Torquay.

In their first season together, it could not have been closer for the newly-crowned Section One champions who almost snatched victory over the final two ends after scoring a treble and a double against Betty McKechnie and Joan Hooper (Plymstock).

In the quarter-finals they came back from 6-2 down to score a five in the latter stages and beat Rosemarie Mayne (Culm Vale) and Nan Peters (South Molton) 21-11.

The Bideford duo look set to team up again next year.

"I don't think we have done too badly at all," said Betty.

They beat Barnstaple's Wendy Holm and Audrey Long in the Section One final at Bideford in July.

There was a fabulous win over England international Rob Paxton (Exonia) in the quarter-finals of the Devon Burma Star triples for Victoria Park's Shelley and Gordon Owen, 62, with Paul Slade, 25.

Gordon said: "It's the first time we've played together as a rink and we were pleased to win by five shots. It was nice for Paul, too, to have got so far."

Bideford's Steve Bonetta is in the Devon squad for the Middleton Cup semi-final against Cumbria at Worthing. Club-mates Darren James and James Popham are reserves.
